A painting on two oak panels connected with dovetails. Size of the painting 70 x 57 cm. Size of frame 100 x 90 cm. The painting shows a stillife with a pewter can, glasses, a blackberry cake and a nautilus cup. On the left the painting is signed on both panels with "MB de Stomme". Maerten Boelema was the deaf-mute son of a rich notary public in Leeuwarden. He became a pupil, the only, of the famous Willem Claeszn Heda of Haarlem in 1642. Born in Leeuwarden in 1611, he died in Haarlem in 1644. In his short life he produced several excellent paintings, all still lifes. This painting is one of them.
